Surviving and Thriving: How Stan Kats Built an MSP from Scratch
I'm buzzing with eco-excitement to spill the beans on something huge – Gozynta, your family owned software company for MSPs , is on a mission to become carbon-neutral! This isn't just any corporate green initiative; it's a heartfelt journey towards making a real, tangible difference for our planet.
The Kickoff: Navigating Our Carbon Footprint
Gozynta co-founder, Brian Johnson has been talking about going Carbon neutral in our earliest days. It has always been our motivation that we want to make a positive impact on the world with our business success, and the environment is top on the list.
In 2023, we decided that finding a path to carbon neutrality or even being carbon-negative would be our goal. Brian had years of research to start us off on our journey but there are many paths to carbon neutrality, many calculating methods, many initiatives out there and we needed to figure out the right path for Gozynta.
Calculating our Carbon Footprint
Our journey into the green unknown started with team meetings that felt more like eco-strategy sessions. The star of the show? A slick carbon calculator we found online allowed us to take all the complexities we have in our business and come up with a number that felt accurate. The calculator helped us map out our digital carbon footprint, which included our travel to trade shows, electricity used in our home offices, the shipment of items, etc. – a crucial step, especially for a tech company like us. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do since we are a fully remote company with employees in the US, Netherlands, UK, Canada, and Spain. Now we had some numbers to work with we needed to find what project we ewre going to support.
Let's talk numbers – we crunched our data and figured our annual carbon emissions hover around 20 tons of CO2. This calculation was a wake-up call, pushing us to allocate a portion of our budget to transform our carbon-neutral aspirations into reality.
Choosing Real-Impact Projects
We're in the business of creating solutions, so settling for superficial green efforts just wouldn't do. We dived deep to find projects that genuinely offset carbon – the kind that makes a significant dent in the planet's carbon crisis, not just a superficial nod to sustainability.
Selecting the right projects meant digging into the nitty-gritty. We wanted to make sure these initiatives weren’t just for show but would provide lasting benefits to our planet. While tree-planting is great, we set our sights on more permanent, tech-forward solutions to the carbon challenge.
In our quest, we stumbled upon some groundbreaking tech in carbon capture, especially the projects by Climeworks. These aren't your run-of-the-mill offsetting projects; they're all about literally cleaning CO2 from the atmosphere! For a software company like Gozynta, supporting such innovative tech aligns perfectly with our ethos of using technology for the greater good. Climeworks was the solution to us.
Investing in the Future
Facing the financial side of things was daunting, but it was a no-brainer for us. We see this as an essential investment in the planet's future. As a tech company, we believe in the power of leading by example, showing that the tech industry can and should be at the forefront of environmental stewardship.
“We’re choosing to be part of the solution rather than ignoring the problem,” Brian Johnson said. “Granted, we’re a small organization, so we’re only going to be a small part of the solution, but hopefully, we can inspire others to follow our example.”
This isn't just a side project for us; it’s woven into the fabric of Gozynta’s identity. It's about proving that technology companies can be a powerful force for positive environmental change. We're committed to this path, using every tool and insight at our disposal to make a real difference.
As we journey forward, we’re always on the lookout for innovative ways to reduce our environmental impact. This path is a constant learning process, one that we’re embracing wholeheartedly. We believe it’s vital for tech companies like us to lead the charge in sustainability.
That’s the scoop on Gozynta's eco-mission – a software company’s pledge to tread lightly on our planet. We're excited about the journey ahead and the positive impact we’ll make. See more about what we are supporting here.
